What is 360° camera webcam mode?

Last updated:

For hosts connecting a panoramic camera to a computer

360° camera webcam mode exposes a panoramic camera as a selectable video input to a connected computer, often through USB. The name does not guarantee panoramic output. For a live CallPano 360° call, the selected device must supply a full equirectangular panorama rather than a cropped or reframed webcam image.

30 trial participant-minutes. No credit card required to start.

CallPano setup with an Insta360 camera, a panoramic video meeting, AR glasses, and a VR headset

One live environment. Independent views. Each participant chooses where to look, without changing anyone else’s view.

Device detection and panoramic compatibility are different tests

A browser may recognize the camera even when its selected mode supplies only a conventional frame. Firmware, USB mode, cable, operating system, and camera output all affect the result. Treat a visible device name as the start of setup, not proof that your guests will be able to look around.

Separate capture from output

A camera can capture 360° footage while exposing a flat webcam image to the computer. Check the live output specifically.

Check the physical connection

Use a supported computer and a data-capable USB cable. A charge-only cable does not provide a usable video connection.

Verify browser access

System and browser permissions must allow camera access. Other software using the device may prevent selection.

Test the guest experience

Ask another participant to pan in several directions and confirm that the scene is complete and correctly rendered.

The Difference

Follow the manufacturer, then verify the panorama

For an X5, follow Insta360’s official support instructions for your current firmware and computer, then use the CallPano X5 setup guide. Do not assume every X4 or X5 configuration exposes full equirectangular video. If the available output is flat, use standard video or resolve compatibility before starting a panoramic session. This device workflow does not establish arbitrary RTMP or RTSP ingestion.

Quick Start

From room to live 360° in three steps

  1. 1

    Create a Room

Create your host account and set up a room from the dashboard. Schedule your meeting if you want to arrange it in advance.

  2. 2

    Share the Link

Send the invitation to your participants. Guests use a supported browser without a CallPano account or app download. Test permissions and room access before the session.

  3. 3

    Go Live in 360°

Test an Insta360 X4 or X5 through a compatible webcam mode that supplies full panoramic output, not just a flat webcam feed. Camera firmware, computer, and browser compatibility matter. Once the panorama is working, guests can look around independently.

Frequently asked questions

Does webcam mode always send the whole panorama?

No. Some modes crop or reframe the camera image. Confirm the actual output for your firmware, computer, and selected USB mode before using panoramic viewing.

Why is my camera missing from the browser selector?

Check the data cable, documented webcam mode, system permissions, and browser permissions. Close other applications using the camera and consult the manufacturer if the device remains unavailable.

Can a viewing option repair a cropped feed?

No. A panoramic display option cannot recreate missing scene coverage. Full equirectangular camera output must reach the browser first.

Do guests need webcam mode too?

No. Only the participant publishing the panorama needs that camera setup. Guests can view the shared scene in a supported browser without their own panoramic camera.
